Along with WWDC 2021, Apple has rolled out a number of features for its music streaming service. Lossless and Spatial Audio update, along with other improvements, are now available for Apple Music on Android.
Update 7/22: Apple Music version 3.6 with improvements in spatial listening, lossless audio, automatic crossfading and library search is now rolled out through the Play Store for all existing and new users. The testing period for those who signed up for the beta channel lasted just over a month and ended this afternoon.
In this update, Apple Music adds a spatial listening experience on compatible devices, with thousands of Dolby Atmos tracks available at launch.
Other updates include:
• Lossless audio, a new way to enjoy uncompromising sound with bit-for-bit precision.
• Automatic crossfade, a new way of listening that mixes each song into the next for a smooth experience.
• Library search enhancements, making it easier for you to find your favorite music through online search.
Original 6/14: These new features require registration for the beta version of the Play Store and are not yet deployed for stable users. It should soon be rolled out to all devices.
Once the update is complete, you will have access to Spatial listening “on compatible devices”, Apple touting “thousands of tracks in Dolby Atmos available at launch”. The company has helpfully curated a playlist of available songs, while you can look for the “Dolby Atmos” badge that appears just above the track list on an album page.
This is also how you check “lossless”. In Settings, there is a new “Audio Quality” menu to enable “Lossless Audio”. The preference allows you to choose between the different levels and where it applies (Cellular, Wi-Fi Streaming or Downloads):
- High efficiency: AAC with low data usage [Cellular only]
- High quality: AAC 256 kbps
- Lossless: ALAC up to 24 bit / 48 kHz
- High resolution lossless: ALAC up to 24 bit / 192 kHz
Meanwhile, Apple Music for Android now offers an automatic crossfade to supplement the existing “Manual” option – up to 12 seconds, while there are library improvements as well.
