The main Apple news from last week:
- iOS 15 could remove two older iPhone models: Apple has a long history of updating even its oldest phones to the latest versions of iOS. However, it must eliminate some older models from the list with each new iteration. According to some sources, next year’s iOS 15 may ditch the original iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and iPhone SE. The 6S models dropped in 2015 and the iPhone SE dropped in 2016, so these phones have had their full length.
- There could be OLED iPads with the supposed mini-LED models: We’ve heard tons of rumors about Apple’s intended use of Mini-LED technology in some of its future products. Now, however, we have a rumor that future iPad Pros will come with Mini-LED models and OLED models. The OLED rumor is new, as we expected Apple to switch from LCD panels to mini LEDs with no OLEDs at all. We’ll have to wait and see if this happens.
- Speaking of iPad, a 5G model could be in the works: In what shouldn’t be surprising news, rumors have cropped up this week suggesting that Apple may be working on a new high-end iPad Pro model that supports mmWave 5G. It could probably be the same iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch Mini-LED display. If that’s true, it’ll be an expensive iPad.
- M1 Mac users say Bluetooth is a big deal: Now that Mac PCs with M1 are in the real world, we’re starting to get a better idea of how they perform. Unfortunately, it appears that Bluetooth on systems powered by M1 is poor, as many users around the world cite poor connections as a major problem. Mac Mini users seem to be the most affected.
- The developer proves that Windows on M1 chips is possible: Alexander Graf recently virtualized the Arm version of Windows on a Mac M1 PC. This proves that nothing prevents Microsoft from offering Boot Camp-style Windows support for M1 systems. It’s just a question that Microsoft actually does, which matches what Apple said a few days ago.
- No more Intel MacBooks still in progress: If the novelty of the M1 chip makes you nervous, don’t worry. A reliable leaker “L0vetodream,” says there may still be new Intel-based MacBooks in 2021. These Intel machines would sell alongside M1 machines, allowing users concerned about legacy programs to continue to upgrade to a new laptop or PC. Ultimately, however, Intel support will stop and Arm-based Macs will be the only option – but not next year, perhaps.
