Apple today announced three new Macs with its new M1 Arm-based processors: a 13-inch MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro, and a Mac mini. But now that the new Macs are here, Apple has started removing some of its Intel Macs from its product line. Here’s what has changed:
- the Macbook Air is now only available with Apple silicone chips. It is no longer possible to buy a MacBook Air with an Intel processor. The new MacBook Air has configurations that start at $ 999 and $ 1,249.
- You can always buy a 13 inch Macbook Pro with an Intel processor, but these models are only available in the high price range. The M1-based 13-inch MacBook Pro replaces the older entry-level MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt ports and starts at $ 1,299 and $ 1,499. Intel processors power configurations that start at $ 1,799 and $ 1,999, and these have four Thunderbolt ports.
- the Mac mini also still offers configurations with Intel processors, but also only at the top end. M1-based versions of the Mac mini start at $ 699 and $ 899, while Intel processors are fueling builds starting at $ 1,099.
The new Macs announced today were the first introduced as part of Apple’s two-year transition from Intel chips to its own Arm-based silicon. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, iMac, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro are still powered by Intel processors.
