Apple opens in-app subscription discounts to existing users

Apps will be able to use three discount templates, allowing customers to access a free subscription for a specified duration, pay a promotional price each billing period, or pay a one-time promotional price – Apple already uses such incentives with his own Apple Music Subscribers. Developers will also be able to offer up to 10 active subscription offers to test the ones that work best. This additional flexibility will be available with the latest beta versions of iOS 12.2, macOS 10.14.4 and tvOS 12.2, using the StoreKit API. Although the beta is still in beta, it seems likely that these changes will be applied to everyone when these software updates are fully released.

Apple started offering its current subscription model a few years ago. Apple is seeing a 30 percent reduction in revenue from apps in the first year, but apps that keep customers subscribing for more than a year must grow by 15 percent. So, keeping subscribers hooked on these additional benefits could prove to be a boon for developers, even if they have to offer short-term discounts.
