Apple has filed a patent application to use the logo on the back of its phones as a light. The patent application, which was first identified by Apple Insider, explains how "adjustable decoration" might react to events such as "incoming communication" or a "calendar reminder" by changing its appearance or flashing to get your attention.
This is not an entirely new idea. We saw a similar feature making its appearance on the Razer Phone 2 last year and the Motorola One Zoom uses its Motorola back logo as a notification cookie rather than a fingerprint sensor, as in models precedents. It's not a huge feature, but it's useful if you want to know that you do not miss anything important when your phone is face down on a desk or table.
This feature is useful for Apple products. After all, the company is illuminating its logo on its old MacBooks, even though it abandoned the design feature when redesigning the 2015 laptop. It would not be a huge step for it to bring back its illuminated logo with a small feature added.
The app frequently refers to "cell phone" calls in its description, which strongly suggests that Apple is considering using the feature on a future iPhone. However, the patent also includes images showing a series of "illustrative electronic devices", including a laptop, a tablet and what appears to be an iMac.
As is always the case with Apple's patents, it is best to read it with healthy skepticism. The fact that Apple has considered a feature does not necessarily mean that it will integrate it soon into one of its products. This does not mean that we do not want this to happen, if only to see the company's laudable logo making a long-awaited comeback.
