Apple appears to be preparing a major version for iOS 14 ahead of the planned launch of iOS 15 this fall, with references to the update that recently appeared in a beta of Xcode.
Spotted by the developer Brendan Shanks, the latest beta of Xcode lists iOS 14.8 as an available or soon to be released OS version. The supposed update comes with existing iOS 14 point releases, but the list doesn’t take note of minor revisions like the more recent iOS 14.7.1.
What will be incorporated in an iOS 14.8 release is unclear. Apple has fixed most of the known vulnerabilities, with the latest round arriving in late July, and the prospect of new features is highly unlikely given that iOS 15 is due out this fall.
Releasing an eighth major update would be an unprecedented move, as Apple’s older mobile operating systems capped at seven revisions at most. That said, for the first time, the company is changing the way it handles major iOS updates.
At the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple said it would continue to provide users of older operating systems with security updates after the release of a major version.
Instead of pushing users to the next major release, in this case iOS 15, Apple will be providing “important security updates” to those who choose to stay on iOS 14. Users will be able to choose from two update versions. software in system settings when iOS 15 sees the release, the company said in a feature preview.
The option will be a welcome respite for some, as Apple intends to roll out new child safety tools with the next iteration of iOS. The multi-pronged system, which partially “scans” photos of users for child pornography, has proven controversial, with some saying the features reduce user privacy.
