Apple first announced this year that AirPods users could install beta firmware on their headphones to try out new features ahead of the official release this fall. While the first beta released in July added Spatial Audio for FaceTime and Ambient Noise Reduction calls, today’s firmware enables Conversation Boost on AirPods Pro.
As one user noted on Reddit, the latest beta firmware for AirPods Pro is version 4A362b. While Apple doesn’t provide release notes to highlight what’s new in this update, users have mentioned that it is adding Conversation Boost.
For those who are not familiar, Conversation Boost amplifies the voice of a person speaking in front of you using beamforming microphones. Apple says the feature is primarily designed for people who have mild hearing problems, which makes it difficult to hear others without using dedicated devices.
Of course, anyone can use this feature to talk with other people without having to take the AirPods out of their ear. Since this is an accessibility option, it can be turned on or off in the Accessibility menu in the iOS Settings app.
The prerequisites for running the AirPods Pro beta include a Mac running Xcode 13 beta, an iPhone running iOS 15 beta 15, and a set of fully loaded AirPods Pro. These features are not available for normal AirPods or AirPods Max.
Apple also announced that users will be able to track each AirPod through the Find My app, just like an AirTag. However, this option has not yet been activated.
