Apple says your iPhone could hurt you. A repair specialist is dismayed

Repair it yourself? If you are practical. May be.

My friend John is a landscaper.

Perhaps because of this, he believes himself very practical.

He believes he has the skills to repair almost anything. Except the occasional relationship.

It was not so long ago, I went to his house and watched him tinker with the bowels of his iPhone. He was stinging and even removing the battery.

"It's easy," he said.

Yet last week, Apple insisted that, unlike anything associated with its products, repairing your iPhone was not easy at all.

Instead, it's positively dangerous.

As my colleague Adrian Kingsley-Hughes explained, Apple and some well-known lobbyists would have gone to the California legislator and told them that no human being without training or genius should ever attempt to repair his iPhone.

The reason? They could be injured by destroying the lithium-ion battery and inciting fire and sulfur.

You see, California was preparing a bill on the right to repair and it has now disappeared.

Of course, though, I thought of John and his little genius expertise. So I went to an independent Apple repair shop to ask some worrying and explosive questions.

I talked about John and his inclination for repair work at the extremely friendly repair man.

"Is it at hand?" the repairman asked, in a really realistic way.

"He says it's it, but I'm afraid the phone will explode and Apple says it could too."

The repairman looked at me, twisted his face and said, "They are just scary. It is a money deal with Apple."

And, indeed, it could be. Apple really likes control. He wants you to invest in Apple Care, Apple Geniuses and all the whims of Apple.

The repairer, however, insisted that it would take a lot of effort to cause a fire when repairing your iPhone.

"We need to drill the battery," he says.

I expressed my relief. Then he smiled and said, "It happened here."

I could not see any visible scars on him, so replied, "Wait, did you have an iPhone exploding here and you are experts?"

"Yeah, it did not totally explode, but there was a lot of smoke."

"So, is not it dangerous?"

"Not really, we were a little careless, to make it explode, you'd have to sting it with force."

He thought about it again.

"The biggest danger for an amateur is to try to clear the battery." he said. "I guess you could get him to do that."

"So, what about John? Is he angry or is he okay?"

"As I said, is it useful?"

Of course, Apple offers many repair services. Some are even free. I'll go to independent repair shops if I break my screen, but not so it's more serious.

Indeed, when I had a problem loading the iPhone, an Apple Genius said I was loading it badly. Shame lived with me for a moment.

Still, I'm not going to tell you that repairing an iPhone at home is a good thing and nothing can ever happen. After all, phones can explode even if they are not repaired.

But I thought that an Apple repair shop might try to get more business by telling me to play with your iPhone, which is dangerous.

I will have to ask John if he has already considered creating an iPhone repair company.

You know, in winter, when he has less to do.
