The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent for a dual-screen MacBook with a virtual keyboard replacing the traditional keyboard and with the ability to charge an iPhone wirelessly.
As reported by Apple obviously, this patent was filed three years ago, and it is only now that Apple has obtained it.
With this patent, the company could take a drastic route and get rid of a physical keyboard. The interesting thing about this app is that while rumors suggest that Apple will remove the only touch interface on the MacBook Pro, the Touch Bar, this patent imagines a MacBook without a physical keyboard at all.
Apple’s patent FIG. 16A above shows virtual keyboard # 1605 in a traditional layout. However, since the images of the virtual keyboard keys are produced by a display under the upper case, different keyboard layouts could be supported as in Fig. 16B using an ergonomic keyboard layout. As another example, it can be seen in FIG. 16C above this dual display laptop could use the virtual keyboard area and use another available UI that could act as a game controller.
Obviously, Apple says that this virtual keyboard could be revamped, swapping the position of the virtual keyboard and the trackpad. With a virtual keyboard, Apple could also bring gestures from iOS and iPadOS, such as pinch, zoom, drag to select, etc.
In the patent, Apple indicates that this MacBook includes biometric sensors, which we could interpret as Face ID, fingerprint sensors (aka Touch ID) and a wireless charger, which would be in the lower left corner of the laptop.
While very futuristic, there are a few notebooks that already feature dual displays, even though they aren’t meant for typing.
It is not known if or if Apple could introduce all of these features in an upcoming MacBook. For now, users expect a redesigned MacBook Pro with no touch bar, more ports, and a miniLED display, as you can read more about here.
