Apple starts shipping updated 20W USB-C charger with new iPad Pro purchases

Apple appears to have started shipping a new 20W USB-C power adapter in the box of newly manufactured iPad Pro models. Apple first introduced this 20W USB-C power adapter alongside the iPhone 12 last month, and it replaces the previously sold 18W USB-C charger.

This change was first spotted on Reddit, with several users confirming that their recently purchased iPad Pro included a 20W adapter instead of the 18W adapter. This is a minor but noticeable change for home buyers. iPad Pro, and Apple’s clear goal is to put as many 20W USB-C adapters out in the wild as possible.

The new MagSafe technology for the iPhone 12 requires the 20W USB-C adapter in order to charge at the full power of 15W. The previously sold 18W adapter only offers 13W of power through MagSafe. Again, with Apple no longer including a wall charger in the box with iPhone purchases, it is looking for other ways to increase the prevalence of 20W USB-C adapters.

Additionally, Apple has likely stopped making the 18W USB-C adapter, so it makes perfect sense from a supply chain perspective to switch from the iPad Pro to the new 20W adapter as well.

Interestingly, Apple’s online store still says the iPad Pro comes with an 18W USB-C adapter in the box. This is likely due to the fact that there are still some iPad Pro models in inventory that were manufactured before the 20W adapter was introduced, so not all iPad Pro sold today necessarily include the new adapter.

Have you recently bought a new iPad Pro 2020? Does it include the 20W power adapter in the box? Let us know in the comments!
