A week after the public sharing of the jailbreak, Apple released iOS 12.4.1 to close the vulnerability. The jailbreak was released after discovering that Apple had accidentally uninstalled a vulnerability that had been originally fixed in iOS 12.3.
The bug was reported to Apple by the Google Project Zero team. Apple has detailed the fix in the security release notes for iOS 12.3. The jailbreak took advantage of this loophole.
When Apple stops signing an iOS version, it means that users can no longer downgrade to this version via iTunes. Decommissioning is common among users waiting for jailbreak updates, especially in this case, given the public availability of a jailbreak for iOS 12.4.
The ability to downgrade is sometimes also useful for those who encounter significant bugs after updating to the latest version of iOS. This is why Apple usually waits several weeks before stopping to sign older versions of iOS.
The public release of a modern iPhone jailbreak has become increasingly rare. In general, the details of the jailbreak are kept confidential to prevent Apple from correcting it. Apple will release iOS 13 to the public on September 19, followed by iOS 13.1 on September 30.
