After reporting that Apple is overseeing a cut in production of the iPhone 12 mini by two million units to offset growing demand for the iPhone 12 Pro, the company may have informed its supplier to follow the same task in an updated report. However, this drop in production is due to the COVID-19 pandemic, rather than weak demand for the compact handset.
Weak sales of the iPhone 12 mini in the US and Europe prompted this decision
Pegatron, one of Apple’s suppliers, is being forced to undergo a cut in production of the iPhone 12 mini as low sales of the 5.4-inch model are seen in the United States and Europe. DigiTimes reports that the weak sales are due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although a previous report pointed out that this version is not as successful as Apple would have liked. Assuming the news is true, Apple could have informed Pegatron to increase production of the more expensive iPhone 12 models, thereby increasing its margins, although this was not mentioned in the report.
Although the pandemic had a negative impact on sales, what is odd to read about this report is that Apple is only reducing production of mini-iPhone 12. One would assume that the reduction in production would be observed for the remaining three models, but this is not to be mentioned by DigiTimes. The iPhone 12 mini is more than likely not doing well as there isn’t a big market for compact devices like this. Customers are geared towards larger screen smartphones because they offer more screen space and better battery sync.
A previous report explained how the iPhone 12 mini was the least sold of the four in the United States during the period October to November. In contrast, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 was the most popular 5G-enabled smartphone for October 2020 worldwide. These statistics alone represent what customers are drawn to. For 2021, as Apple releases four iPhone 13 models of the same display sizes as last year, it may revisit its strategy for the iPhone 13 mini in production.
