Apple was ordered to pay Personalized Media Communications $ 308.5 million after violating a patent related to digital rights management (DRM), reported Bloomberg. A federal jury in Marshall, Texas, ruled Friday that the company had infringed PMC’s patent after a five-day trial.
Personalized Media had filed a lawsuit claiming that Apple infringed its patent with technology including FairPlay, which is used for the distribution of encrypted content from its iTunes, App Store and Apple Music apps.
It all started in 2015. PMC sued Apple for allegedly infringing seven of its patents. The Apple company successfully challenged the personalized multimedia communications case with the US patent office, but PMC appealed to court last year and overturned the board’s ruling that some patent claims were invalid.
AT Bloomberg, Apple said it was “disappointed with the decision and would appeal.” Google and YouTube recently won a patent trial by PMC and the case against Netflix is pending in New York.
PMC is a non-practicing entity, which means the company only files patents but does not use them. Personalized Media Communications owns dozens of patents and generates revenue through patent litigation.
This is not the first and it surely will not be the last case that Apple will face. The founder of Epic Games slammed the company on Friday for promoting PUBG Mobile on the App Store. Their trial is scheduled for May.
