Apple Inc. will use Tesla Inc. batteries to store energy from a solar farm in northern California, according to a report from The Verge Wednesday night.
Earlier today, Apple AAPL,
announced a renewable energy storage project near its solar installation in Monterey County, south of San Jose, which will store about 240 magawatt hours of energy – enough to power about 7,000 homes.
Although the ad does not mention Tesla, a Monterey County planning official confirmed to The Verge that Apple will use 85 Tesla TSLA,
Lithium-ion “megapacks” for the project, which will help power Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.
In a statement, Apple said the “California Flats” project will be “one of the largest battery projects in the country” and will support its solar farm which generates 130 megawatt hours and supplies all of Apple’s renewable energy in California. The project will store excess energy produced during the day and distribute it as needed.
Last July, Apple pledged to be 100% carbon neutral by 2030.
Apple added on Wednesday that more than 110 of its manufacturing partners around the world are switching to 100% renewable energy for production.
“We are strongly committed to helping our suppliers become carbon neutral by 2030 and we are delighted that the companies that have joined us span industries and countries around the world,” said Lisa Jackson, vice president of Apple for the environment, policy and social initiatives statement.
