Apple has recruited one of Google's engineers in artificial intelligence to strengthen its artificial intelligence team. Apple recently hired Ian Goodfellow, of Google, to join his "Special Projects Group" as Director of Machine Learning, according to his LinkedIn profile.

CNBC was the first to report that Goodfellow joined Apple's machine learning team. Goodfellow is described as "father of the general accusatory networks, or GAN". This technology can be used to generate fake multimedia content, as CNBC explains:
Goodfellow is the father of an AI approach known as the General Accident Networks, or GAN. The approach relies on two networks, one known as the Generative Network and the other known as the Discriminating Network, and allows to generate unusual and creative outputs under form of audio, video and text.
GAN systems have been used to generate deepfake multimedia content.
Goodfellow's LinkedIn page indicates that he left Google for Apple last month. His official title in the company is "Director of Machine Learning in the Special Projects Group". Before Google, he worked for OpenAI.
Apple's hiring of Goodfellow comes one year after hiring Google's head of research and artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea. Last December, Giannandrea was promoted to senior vice president of Apple's Machine Learning and AI Strategy, reporting directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Earlier this year, Apple's Siri VP quit after a change in Giannandrea's strategy.
Apple has also recently regrouped its artificial intelligence teams, under the control of Giannandrea. This change brought together the Siri and Core ML teams. In November, Apple acquired the start-up Silk Labs, specializing in artificial intelligence and focused on confidentiality.
Google has confirmed the departure of Goodfellow in a statement, while Apple declined to comment.
