EXCLUSIVE: Oprah Winfrey receives biographical documentary treatment after Apple TV + commissions a two-part focused on the multi-dash billionaire.
Oscar-winner Kevin MacDonald teams up with Emmy-nominated producer Lisa Erspamer and her Happy Street Entertainment banner on the project. The couple once did a biography of Whitney Houston Whitney.
Winfrey was known to be a fan of the film, having tweeted to Erspamer in 2018, calling the film “fearless”. Winfrey and Erspamer have also had a long-standing relationship from when the latter produced The Oprah Winfrey Show for a decade between 1999 and 2009.
The new doc will chronicle 25 years of American history through the lens of a show and a woman who grew from humble roots to become a host, producer, actress and philanthropist of world renown. MacDonald directs both parties, Emmy nominee Rolake Bamgbose is the showrunner.
The project joins a growing list of unscripted shows that Apple is working on with Winfrey’s Harpo after the two companies signed a multi-year deal in 2018. They include Oprah’s Conversation, Oprah Book Club and Oprah speaks COVID-19, which are all currently streaming.
