As a rule, Apple creates fanfare around the arrival of new materials. But this year, he hopes the spring press event will be at the center of his streaming service. That's why the company has informed the world of its new iPads in a press release.
The iPad Air is equipped with a larger 10.5-inch screen (starting at $ 499) and the iPad mini is equipped with the same 7.9-inch screen (from 399 $). The devices support Apple Pencil and a processor three times faster than previous models.
The iPad mini will mainly serve as an entertainment device, likely to attract students and teens, while the lightweight Air iPad will replace the iPad's 10.5-inch Pro Shop in Apple line.
Apple should largely tease the iPads before its spring event on March 25th. But the press release was a surprise.
"Apple wants to release the iPad so it can host its first truly streaming event," CNN Business Researcher Lauren Guenveur, a research analyst at IDC, told CNN. "If Apple announced new pads, it would turn into a hardware event, and that's not what it wants."
Shipments of tablets have declined in recent years, especially among devices that do not come with a keyboard. "Maybe what's the point of having an event for a declining category?" Guenveur added.
Guenveur thinks the new 10.5-inch iPad Air might have a hard time finding a place in the market, given that the 11-inch iPad Pro is still a more powerful option that also supports pencil. The iPad Mini, however, could push a decent number of people to upgrade.
"There is certainly a market for the iPad Mini, especially among students and teens, but I do not know how long the upgrade cycle will last," Guenveur said. "I guess it will work fine for a major upgrade – cycle for the rest of the year, then drop slowly."
