Apple Watch 5 Series tapes can cause interference with the compass

Apple Watch Series 5 is the first version to include an integrated digital compass, but Apple has failed to change the laws of physics regarding the operation of magnets. For this reason, Apple suggests using some bands rather than others if the reliability of the compass is important to you.

This is because digital compasses like those of the new Apple Watch Series 5 and iPhone 3GS, and later, rely on a magnetoresistive permalloy sensor called magnetometer to detect magnetism levels.

The orientation of the device is not a factor because of the three-axis design, but the magnetic interference must face the magnetometers – and this includes the Apple Watch magnetic tapes.

Apple warns that tapes with magnetic clasps can interfere with the built-in compass (something I've been wondering aloud during a recent visit from an Apple WatchCast guest) and limit the amount of time I've had. ;accuracy. This is because the sensor can confuse the magnetic attraction of the band with that of the planet, which makes it difficult to apply the compass to interpret the direction in which you are heading.

This type of interface would not prevent GPS navigation from working properly, but would limit the compass's ability to display standing orientation.

Apple's disclaimer is attached to each Apple Watch bracelet with a magnetic closure, including the Leather, Loop Milanese and Modern Buckle buckles. The bands that will not affect the accuracy of the compass include Sport, Sport loops and Hermes leather straps.

Apple bundles some of the Series 5 models with interference-prone tapes, although you can combine cases and tapes from the same collection this year with Apple Watch Studio. Apple also sold wristbands with watches that had not been used yet with new features. Metal and leather bands do not have water resistance, like Apple Watch Series 2 and later.

The same warning should apply to third-party bands that also use magnetic closures. The Apple Watch Series 5 with a new permanent screen is available to order now and will be available in stores on Fridays.
