Production of the next Apple Watch has been delayed in large part due to the complicated designs of the new smartwatch, Nikkei Asia has learned.
The makers of Apple Watch 7, as the device should be called, began small-scale production last week, but faced critical challenges in achieving satisfactory production performance, several people familiar with the situation said.
Three sources said that the current disappointing production quality could be attributed to the complexity of the design, which is very different from previous generations of the watch, and the assemblers encountered problems while assembling the electronic modules, components and screens.
But he said one example of these “significant” differences was the measurement of blood pressure.
The next Apple Watch will come with new features like blood pressure measurement, they said, which means production involves installing more components in a body of similar size.
That was a surprising claim, given the lack of supporting reports so close to launch, and Gurman has now dismissed that.
There have also been reports of blood sugar monitoring, but these rumors circulate every year, and Bloomberg said it was still years away.
What we expect is a new tile design to match the design of current iPhones and iPads; a larger screen thanks to a combination of larger cases and smaller bezels; and a faster processor. There were also suggestions for new color options.
New watch faces are also said to be included.
This year’s watches will be available in sizes of 41 and 45 millimeters, instead of 40 and 44 millimeters. I’m told Apple will be bundling several new watch faces to take advantage of the larger display, including an updated Infograph Modular face. This will be the second time in Apple Watch history that the company has increased the screen size, following the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2017.
