Apple Watch is once again credited with helping keep someone connected during a life-threatening situation. the BBC reports that a cyclist in England was rescued from a flooded river after contacting emergency services via his Apple Watch.
The story explains that the man was blown off his bicycle into the swollen River Wye in Rotherwas, Hereford:
He was hauled a mile downstream, but managed to grab a branch and spoke to fire control. Station Commander Sean Bailey said he was “lucky” to have kept his hand on the branch, adding, “We are very surprised he hasn’t lost his grip.”
While hanging onto the tree, the cyclist was able to use his Apple Watch to contact emergency services. Between the location provided by the Apple Watch and the help of passers-by, the firefighting teams were able to save and locate the Apple Watch:
Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester, Mr Bailey said the cyclist was spotted by passers-by who were able to give crews an idea of his whereabouts.
“Even with this place, it took us 20 minutes to locate it, rescue it and bring it to safety.
He was talking to our fire control as he clung to a tree, via his Apple Watch, which worked wonderfully well so we could get to him as quickly as possible.
In the end, the cyclist was rescued “about a mile from where he went in the river” despite being “very quickly pulled into the fast part of the river”.
The man was rescued about a mile from where he went in the river, Mr Bailey said, adding that he was “very quickly dragged into the fast-flowing part” of the river. “Our guys are very well trained for this kind of event, but we can’t replicate those situations, the high river levels you get in a flood.
He said even strong swimmers would have struggled in the conditions. “He’s a very lucky man to have been able to get his hands on a branch and then spend probably 20 minutes in the water while he clings to that branch, we’re very surprised that he didn’t lost its grip.
