Apple said on Monday that longtime chief hardware engineering Dan Riccio will step up to vice president of engineering as he takes on a “new project” for the tech giant.
Riccio will step down from his current role as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, but will remain a direct report to CEO Tim Cook. John Ternus will now lead Apple’s Hardware Engineering organization as a member of the executive team.
“Every innovation Dan has helped bring Apple to life has made us a better and more innovative company, and we’re thrilled that he continues to be part of the team,” said Cook. “John’s deep expertise and vast experience make him a bold and visionary leader of our hardware engineering teams. I want to congratulate them both on these exciting new steps, and I look forward to seeing many more innovations that they will help bring to the world. “
Riccio joined Apple in 1998 as vice president of product design and rose through the ranks to oversee the first iPad as vice president of iPad hardware engineering in 2010. In 2012, Riccio and fellow executive Craig Federighi were promoted to executive vice president, with former replacement materiel chief Bob Mansfield as vice president of hardware engineering.
“Working at Apple has been the opportunity of a lifetime, spent making the best products in the world with the most talented people you can imagine,” Riccio said in a prepared statement. “After 23 years leading our product design or hardware engineering teams – culminating in our biggest and most ambitious product year of all time – now is the right time for a change. Then, I can’t wait to do what I love the most – focus all my time and energy at Apple on creating something new and wonderful that I couldn’t be more excited about. “
Riccio’s transition to a VP role is eerily reminiscent of Mansfield’s move in 2012. At the time, Mansfield was scheduled to retire but agreed to remain in a limited capacity to advise Cook on “future products”. Four years later, Mansfield was reportedly hired to lead the “Apple Car” project after its former director, Steve Zadesky, left Apple in a strained relationship. The effort is now led by AI and Chief Siri, John Giannandrea.
The management reshuffle comes amid reports that development of an “Apple Glass” AR headset has been stalled.
Apple veteran and current vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus takes over from Riccio. A member of Apple’s product design team since 2001, Ternus has overseen hardware engineering efforts on products, including first-generation AirPods and every generation iPad. More recently, Ternus has featured prominently in major presentations detailing the Mac’s transition to Apple Silicon.
