The iOS 14.7.1 update released by Apple a few weeks ago is wreaking havoc with some iPhone users. Although the update was primarily designed to fix an Apple Watch bug, some iPhone users with the update are experiencing connectivity issues with their cellular service.
According to posts on Apple discussion boards and social media sites like Reddit, affected users see a “No Service” message at the top of the screen.

Is there a fix for the iOS 14.7 cellular issue?
For those users experiencing the problem, there does not seem to be a one-size-fits-all solution yet. Some users have tried restarting their devices and resetting their network settings without success. Others have tried new SIM cards and direct support from their operators, also without success.
Notably, the issue does not appear to be specific to an individual iPhone model. Users of older devices like the iPhone 7 and newer devices like the iPhone 11 all seem to be affected.
This iPhone cellular problem is particularly unusual
IOS updates this late in a release cycle are generally uneventful. More often than not, they do not contain important new features. Instead, they usually contain minor bug fixes and performance improvements. And indeed, iOS 14.7.1 was exactly that kind of little update.
In light of this, it’s pretty rare to see an iOS update this late in the year causing this type of issue.
What does Apple say about the problem?
Apple has yet to release an official statement on the matter. However, the company has a supporting document on this subject. The support document details a list of actions to take when you encounter a “No Service” message.
The list may not work in the majority of cases, but it is worth highlighting just in case.
If you are in an area where reception is generally good, Apple advises users to check for and install a carrier settings update.
- Make sure your device is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.
- Tap Settings> General> About. If an update is available, you will see an option to update your carrier’s settings.
- To see the version of carrier settings on your device, tap Settings> General> About and look next to Operator
Apple also recommends that you remove your SIM card and reinsert it.
If none of the above work, Apple recommends that users reset their network settings. This can be done by going to Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings. Note that this also resets Wi-Fi passwords, so you’ll need to re-enter credentials for saved networks.
Going forward, we know Apple is planning an iOS 14.8 update soon, so hopefully a fix for this operator issue is imminent.
