After the launch of the first MacBook Pro M1 in November, all eyes turned to the next versions. According to two reports from the industry’s most accurate analysts, they could deliver anything we want.
TFT Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterates rumors that a new 14-inch MacBook Pro will come alongside a refreshed 16-inch model, both featuring Apple’s next-gen silicon with “more cores and improved graphics, ”according to a similar report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
They could also bring a new design. According to MacRumors, Kuo says the new models “negate the curved top and bottom design of the existing models and adopt a flat-edged form factor design similar to the iPhone 12.” Presumably this refers to the corners of the case, but Kuo offers no further clues. Gurman says the new MacBooks “will look like the current versions, but with minor design changes.”
Kuo and Gurman also agree that MagSafe will return. Apple killed the quick-connect magnetic MagSafe in favor of USB-C several years ago, but brought back the name and the magnetic concept with the iPhone 12. Kuo doesn’t provide any further details other than to say the technology will be “restored,” although Bloomberg sheds additional light on the rumor: “The connector will be similar to the elongated pill-shaped design of the old MagSafe port. Despite abandoning USB-C for charging, Apple will still include multiple USB-C ports on its future Macs. The report also states that the MagSafe report will allow MacBooks to charge “at a faster rate.”
Even more surprising are the claims that Apple is killing the Touch Bar. A somewhat controversial move that came in 2016, the Touch Bar is a small screen above the number key that brings additional functionality beyond the usual function keys. In his report, Kuo claims that “the OLED touch bar is removed and the physical function buttons are restored”, while Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has “tested versions that remove the touch bar.”
As for the screens, Bloomberg reports that they will not only be larger, they will also be brighter with “higher contrast panels”. Apple could turn to the mini LED for new screens as previously announced.
