Apple's tracking labels would use, it seems, ultra-wideband for accuracy

As with any communication protocol, this new standard has the limitation that both devices must use the technology. According to a previous Kuo report, the three iPhones 2019 will feature UWB. Unfortunately, this excludes all current owners of the iPhone.

The latest note from Kuo says nothing about how existing iPhones will connect to Apple's new tracking tool, but a likely answer is that they will fall back on Bluetooth LE. In the future, Apple will likely integrate the protocol with its other devices, with AirPod as an obvious candidate. There, technology could make all the difference when you are forced to find a lost Pod in the dark crevices of an MTA subway station.
