A 6.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Saturday, informed the Geological Survey of the United States, without for the moment that there is evidence of victims or damage.

The strong earthquake occurred 258 km northeast of the city of Manado in northern Sulawesi. No tsunami warning has been issued.

Indonesia often suffers from earthquakes or volcanic eruptions due to its position in the Pacific “ring of fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

The magnitude 9.1 earthquake of December 26, 2004, off Sumatra, caused a tsunami and 220,000 deaths across the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia.

It was one of the worst natural disasters on record.
