After four days of house arrest for an alleged money laundering case, Nicaraguan opposition Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, excluded from the presidential elections in November, remains completely in secret but “with her head held high”, she declared this Saturday at EFE his older brother.

“Until yesterday, her children were allowed to visit her, Antonio Ignacio and Cristiana María, she (Cristiana) still with her head held high”said Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Barrios, the older brother of Cristiana, former national deputy (2007-2017) and former city councilor of Managua (2004-2006).

The director of the late Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy (FVBCH) has been under house arrest since June 2 by a decree of the Judicial Power at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which investigates her for having committed the offenses of “abusive management and ideological lying in competition with the laundering of money, property and assets” by the Public Prosecutor.

Chamorro, who called President Daniel Ortega a “dictator” and said he was “horrified” at the idea of losing power, announced in May that he would register as a presidential candidate for the November 7 elections, in which the sovereign seeks his third consecutive re-election.

Pedro Joaquín, also brother of the winner of the Ortega y Gasset 2021 prize, Carlos Fernando Chamorro Barrios, who suffered two confiscations by the regime, insisted that he speaks exclusively in a personal capacity and He said Cristiana was “in good health, they treated her well”, although she mentioned that she felt “very concerned about the situation she is going through”.

FORMER PRESIDENT DOESN’T KNOW HIS DAUGHTER’S SITUATION

The older brother said that Cristiana’s situation was not informed to her mother, the former President of Nicaragua, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997), who suffers from an illness that affects her state of consciousness. and is known to have beaten Ortega in the 1990 election.

Pedro Joaquín said he was “surprised” that the Ortega regime accuses Cristiana because “he would have found inconsistencies in the financial situation of the Foundation from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, documents that the ministry of the Interior already owned since then.

“But he found them until my sister ran for president and had preferences in the opinion polls,” he added.

According to pollster Cid Gallup, Cristiana Chamorro Barrios is the most popular presidential candidate in Nicaragua, which could give her enough voice to emulate her mother’s victory in 1990.

“Accusing him of money laundering makes no sense, the agencies that funded him said it was completely clean money, they tried to deny him constitutional rights, I say feigned because according to the Constitution this only happens with a final judgment “, insisted the older brother.

Likewise, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Barrios acknowledged the “unanimous national and international support” for his sister, but regretted her state of isolation.

“I don’t know how many days she will have to eat (…) the only thing I would like is for my sister to somehow feel this support to encourage her more, but it is totally isolated from telephones, information, television “, he pointed out.
