Peru sent a protest note to Argentina for Alberto Fernández’s congratulations to Pedro Castillo ahead of official election results

“Before the expressions of the President of the Argentine Republic, Alberto Fernández, made on the date, the government of Peru was forced to hand over a Protest Note to the Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, indicating that the final results of the general elections of 2021 have not yet been announced by the electoral authorities of our country“, Reported this Thursday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru in a statement.

Argentinian Alberto Fernández was this Thursday the first president to congratulate Pedro Castillo as the elected ruler of Peru, although his proclamation is still pending due to a trial of his opponent, Keiko Fujimori.

“Today (Thursday) I contacted @PedroCastilloTe, President-elect of Peru. I expressed my wish that we join forces in favor of Latin America. We are deeply twinned nations. I celebrate that the dear Peruvian people face the future in democracy and with institutional strength, ”Fernandez wrote on his Twitter account.

Castillo has yet to be officially declared the winner, but leads Sunday’s poll with a narrow lead, which continues to decline.

With 99.1% of polls scrutinized, Castillo holds 50.2% of the vote, against 49.7% for Fujimori.

The daughter of former jailed president Alberto Fujimori has asked the national election jury to overturn the results of 802 polling stations – implying around 200,000 votes – for alleged irregularities and “table fraud”.

On another side, Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also congratulated Pedro Castillo on Thursday and stressed that his “victory” is “progress in the popular struggle” in Latin America.

“I want to congratulate Pedro Castillo for the important victory in Peru and to salute the Peruvian people for the free and democratic elections. The result of the Peruvian polls is symbolic and represents one more step forward in the popular struggle in our beloved Latin America, ”the Brazilian wrote on his Twitter account.

Alberto Fernández had already ruled on Castillo on Wednesday during a press conference in Buenos Aires with the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez. “I haven’t had a chance to speak with whoever was apparently elected, but if that was confirmed I would call him today. I sincerely hope that we work together and join forces in favor of Latin America, ”said the President.

“Peru is a people that we love very much and if President Castillo (sic) was elected, that he hopes that he will call him today to congratulate and greet him, and put me at his disposal to work on its sides, “Fernández said Wednesday.
