Vote in Peru: OAS ruled out “serious irregularities” in elections

The Mission “followed” the voting and the post-electoral phase, and held meetings with both candidates, with the interim Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti and with the officials of the electoral body which organizes and counts the votes (ONPE) and with the National Election Jury (JNE), which resolves the demands for contestation and proclaims the winner.

Despite this report by the OAS and other election observation bodies which ruled out the existence of election fraud, Fujimori announced last Wednesday that he would challenge and seek to overturn nearly 200,000 votes on charges of irregularities and “table fraud”.

Fujimori’s team argued allegations of forging signatures at polling stations, or forging poll results simply because they did not record any votes for the candidate. “We have seen Peru Libre’s systematic intention to violate the popular will,” Fujimori said.
