Google dedicated its doodle to the start of winter

Google remembers the start of winter in the southern hemisphere with a graphic that hints at the cold this season. This doodle can be seen in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and South Africa.

The beginning of winter and summer are given by the solstices, in the same way that the equinoxes mark the beginning of autumn and spring.

The word solstice means “still sun” and this phenomenon will make us live today the shortest day of the year and the longest night. Earth’s orbit is elliptical, so it has a major axis and a minor axis. However, what causes the seasons is the tilt of the axis and not the proximity or distance from the sun. If that did not happen, it would be winter or summer at the same time in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Solstices occur because the earth revolves around the sun tilted on its axis by approximately 23.5 °. Hence the effect of the movement in the star’s sky: this is the time of year when the Sun is furthest from the equator. That is, the rays hit the Earth more strongly and do so from below, from the south.

Depending on the time zone of each country, the onset of winter will vary by a few hours or minutes but in all cases the day will be the shortest and the following days will begin to lengthen until the arrival of summer. .
