Miami collapse: Rescue efforts halted due to danger of collapse in rest of condominium

The Mayor of Miami-Dale, Daniella Levine Cava, he reported that Rescue efforts from the rubble of the Champlain Tours condominium were halted due to the danger of the remaining building collapsing.

Levine Cava stated that relatives of missing persons have already been informed of the interruption which, clarified, unrelated to the visit of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to the scene of the tragedy.

The authorities fear for the stability of the building which stands and they are waiting for the engineers’ recommendations to assess how to proceed.

According to the rescuers, there is 15 and 30 centimeters of movement in a large column in the underground car park and movement of concrete behind the building it could knock off whatever is still standing.

Until 02:11 (local time) this Thursday, when the emergency services were interrupted, no one was found in the rubble.

Joe Biden is already in Florida

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, and his wife, Jill Biden, arrived at Surfside on Thursday, Florida, site of a fatal condo collapse, offer condolences to the families of the dead and missing as the number of victims increased.

Biden, whose personal experience of the tragedy marked his political career, will visit the scene of the tragedy as rescue teams continue to search for victims amid the rubble of the building, which collapsed within a week while residents slept.

The number of confirmed deaths raised to 18 Wednesday with the discovery of six other bodies in the ruins of the condominium Champlain Tours South, including the remains of two children aged 4 and 10, said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Other 145 people are missing and it is feared that they are trapped in the rubble.
