Haitian Police claim to have captured the alleged assassins of President Jovenel Moise

Haiti’s Secretary of State for Communication, Frantz Exantus, reported on Wednesday that the police have captured the “suspected killers” of President Jovenel Moise.

“Suspected assassins of the president intercepted by the National Police in Pélérin shortly before 6:00 p.m. (local time)”, he wrote on his Twitter account.

Moise was killed in an early Wednesday morning attack on his private residence in which the first lady was also shot.The interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, indicated in a press release.

The men, armed with rifles, would have spoken in English and Spanish, according to the version proposed by the Haitian authorities.

Exantus has announced that more details on the police operation in Pélerin will be offered in the next few minutes., the same sector of a private mansion where Moise’s residence is located.

Residents of the area reported that violent shootings were reported this afternoon in the Pélerin area.

“The injured first lady is alive and receiving the care she needs. The president’s children are safe, ”Joseph told Magik 9 radio.

In a statement, Joseph called on the population for calm, assuring that the Police and the Army are responsible for maintaining order. He also condemned the assassination, which he called “An act of barbarism.”

Haiti’s interim representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Bocchit Edmond, assured that the security situation in his country “is now under control”.

“The National Police and the Armed Forces of Haiti provide security. Measures have been taken to guarantee the continuity of the State ”declared the diplomat in his speech to the Permanent Council of the inter-American body, convened in an extraordinary way after the aforementioned crime.

Edmond, who described Moses’ murder as “horrible” and indicated that on July 8 a national mourning was declared in honor of the sovereign, confirmed that a state of siege was declared “throughout the territory of Haiti” for 15 days.

He explained that his country is shocked by the “Wicked” murder of his agent at the hands of “unidentified individuals” who he said spoke Spanish and English.
