Chile recorded fewer than 2,000 new cases of covid-19 on Tuesday for the first time since December 2020, a figure which indicates that the second wave which lasted almost three months is in remission in most of the country, where more than 72% of the target population have already completed their vaccination.

The number of people infected in the past 24 hours has fallen to 1,885 and the number of patients admitted to intensive care units has also declined, to 2,728.

The positivity rate – number of positive cases for 100 PCR tests performed – was 4.9%, after completing more than 33,000 exams, and 5% in the metropolitan area, which is home to the capital.

Following the drastic improvement in the epidemiological situation over the past two weeks, the authorities have announced the lifting of the quarantine in dozens of municipalities across the country, including most of the capital region, and now this restriction affects less than 10% of the population.

Along with the lifting of restrictions, there was the arrival of the Delta variant in the country, the most contagious according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and of which at least three cases have already been confirmed last week.

Chile, which keeps its borders closed and the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, has reached nearly 1.57 million total infections and 33,288 deaths since the start of the pandemic, with 39 deaths confirmed last day.

In terms of vaccination, Chile has deployed one of the most efficient procedures in the world, which today reaches more than 81% of the target population with a dose already 72% with two doses.

Of the 26 million doses Chile has received since the start of the pandemic, more than 18.5 million have come from Coronavac, although they also came in lesser measures from Pfizer (5.9 million), AstraZeneca (around 900,000) and Cansino (575,000).
