Africa is going through its worst pandemic moment because of the Delta

Almost half of the cumulative cases, 3 million, correspond to the southern region, with South Africa in the lead, while just over a quarter of the total, 1.7 million, are recorded in the north.

Part of the problem stems from newer variants of the virus, especially the Delta, between 30% and 60% easier to transmit, according to the WHO, and that in recent days it has been detected in 21 countries of the continent.

However, it is still possible to travel to many African states without too many restrictions, such as Kenya, where you can enter with a negative PCR result, if you have not been to India before.

In other countries, by contrast, the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has already eclipsed the second, with higher weekly figures than in January, for which countries like Rwanda, Uganda and Tunisia were forced to reintroduce restrictions, such as bans on meetings and social events and non-essential travel.

Globally, of the 811 million people who suffered from hunger in 2020, 282 million belong to Africa, according to a United Nations (UN) interagency study that recorded an increase of 46 million people under -fed on this continent last year.

Added to this is the fragility of health systems, with little electricity, protocols or training for their campaigns; the impact of climate change in places like Mozambique, and the violence faced by civilians in Ethiopia, in the Tigray region, and in Chad, in the Sahel region, where there are 5.4 million displaced people.

Another case is that of South Africa, the African country with the greatest inequality in the distribution of wealth and the most affected by the pandemic, with more than 2.2 million cases and nearly 65,000 deaths.

In the second week of July, Eritrea, Tanzania and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic have not yet received any vaccine doses; Nigeria, the continent’s most populous country with 209 million inhabitants, has barely vaccinated 1% of its population; and Chad started vaccinating on June 4, six months after Europe.
