The ‘bungee’ company claims after the death of a young man in Antioquia: “It is not true that the jump was due to confusion”

This weekend, a tragedy was reported on the viaduct between the municipalities of Amagá and Fredonia, southwest of Antioquia. 25-year-old woman identified as Yecenia Morales died while practicing Bungee jumping jumping off a bridge. According to some versions, the young woman was launched by a confusion, which they denied.

This Thursday, the company finally ruled on the facts after knowing that it would not have the authorizations to operate. In their statement, they deplored the death of Yecenia, “we are accompanying her family and friends”. Then they explained what happened, in their version:

“Regarding the versions of events that circulated in the media, with due regard for the investigation carried out by the authorities, we would like to clarify the following:

a. It is not true, as has been reported, that Yecenia Morales Gómez’s jump was due to the confusion of a jump order given to her boyfriend. At the time of the accident, no one was jumping, not her boyfriend or anyone else.

b. Our protocol is designed for individual jumps and with only one person per jump. This means that in order for a person to jump, you have to complete everything that has to do with the jump of the previous person. (launch, recovery).

vs. Yecenia was the person who continued to jump, even though she already had the harness on. For this moment, it only remained to complete the recovery of the person who had jumped a few minutes before. In the video, which has gone viral, shows Yecenia’s jump, but it also shows that the person who jumped earlier had just been recovered. This is relevant because it indicates that there was no confusion with another jump or another person.

5. Out of respect for Yecenia, her family and the investigation carried out by the authorities, we will refrain from making any assumptions or conclusions regarding “reasons” or responsibility. The authorities are investigating and our role is to support their work. The day after the events, we handed over the documentation relating to our activity to the authorities.

6. Finally, we want to report that over 4000 people jumped in the SKY BUNGEE JUMPING with our help, without any incident. However, as a result of these events, we want to honor the memory of Yecenia. One of our objectives is to put in place, in terms of protocols, new actions to avoid this type of accident.

Finally, they declared that show jumping was a “relatively new activity and without much regulation in Colombia”.

Faced with the tragic outcome, Andrés Morales, the young woman’s brother, in dialogue with El Tiempo, stressed that the company which was in charge of the activity has disappeared and has not given any answers.

“What matters (the boyfriend) is that the company just went down and looked how she was, they took off her harness and she never saw them again”, said the parent.

The fact was recorded in a video circulating on social networks and we can see the moment of anguish in which the woman falls into the void, while her boyfriend is suspended from the rope, as he was subjected to the harness .

Morales explained that at the time of the accident, the young woman’s boyfriend came down to the scene and attempted to provide first aid, however, it was too late. From him, we know that he follows “In shock, don’t answer”affirmed Andrés.

“She walked up to the launch site and already had things in place and, at any moment, she’s going. The friend tells me that they heard something, we do not know in this case if it was an order, if the monitors use a keyword. He heard that and so did she and she throws herself, ”she told the outlet.
