Uruguay reached 60% of its population this Saturday with the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to information provided by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

As can be seen in the web monitor developed by the Health Portfolio, at 11:22 a.m. (2:22 p.m. GMT) this Saturday 2,127,057 people were inoculated with the second dose of vaccines from the American Pfizer, Chinese Sinovac or Anglo-Swedish AstraZeneca laboratories, which supposes a 60.04% of the population.

In addition, 2,532,547 more people received the first dose of any of these three vaccines, who are those who arrived in Uruguay, the first two by direct purchase and the last under the Covax mechanism, of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The department of Flores has the highest percentage of vaccinated population, with 68.51%, followed by Durazno, with 67.54%.

In addition, Rivera, located on the border with Brazil and which has recorded a high incidence of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, adds 61.88% of its population with the two doses.

Uruguay returned last Sunday, after seven months, to the Harvard index yellow zone, which cumulates the weekly average of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants (between 1 and 10). Currently, the country’s index is 7.02 and the only departments that remain orange are Paysandú and Treinta y Tres, while 16 others are already in yellow and Flores in green.

Gradually, the South American country regains its normality, with the total return to the presence in education, the reopening of theaters – although with capacity and security protocols – and the return of public officials to office work.

However, the country’s borders continue to be closed to non-residents, with exceptions for diplomatic, personal or economic and professional reasons, with the express permission of the Executive.

Compared to the rest of the countries in the region, Uruguay is very well placed. It is only exceeded by Chile, which has already vaccinated with two doses at 62.19%. Colombia inoculated the two doses at 21.4%, Brazil at 17.42%, Argentina at 12.98%, Peru at 12.26%, Ecuador at 11.29%, Bolivia at 6.82%, Venezuela at 3.87% and Paraguay at 1.98%. Across the rest of the continent, Canada vaccinated with two doses at 54.15%, the United States at 48.57% and Mexico at 17.93%.
