Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the demonstration of Russian military might during a naval parade in St. Petersburg on the occasion of the 325th anniversary of the Russian Navy.
The head of the Kremlin notably mentioned the high precision hypersonic weapons, which “still have no analogues in the world and continue to be constantly perfected”.
“We are able to detect any enemy target under water, on the surface of the sea or in the air and, if necessary, to deliver an irreversible blow”, warned Putin during the reception of the fifth big stop of the Navy in St. Petersburg in his hometown since the disintegration of the USSR.
“In the shortest possible time, Russia has taken its rightful place among the great maritime powers, having traveled a colossal path of development from the humble ship of Peter I the Great to the mighty ocean-going ships and submarines. nuclear missile cruise ship. », Underlined the president. And he challenged: “The Russian Navy can locate and deliver a military coup to any adversary.”
Also at this year’s naval parade Almost 4,000 soldiers and 48 planes and helicopters took part. On the occasion of Navy Day, the large trawler “Mecánico Sizov” will also be keeled in Saint Petersburg.
As part of the rearmament program, the Russian Navy will receive more than 180 new ships and ships by 2027. In particular, the Navy is expected to receive the Tsirkon Hyperonic Cruise Missiles, capable of flying at a speed nine times the speed of sound, which are in the final phase of testing.
In a context of strong tensions with the West, Putin has praised in recent years the new weapons of his country, which he says are “invincible”. Other weapons are also in development, such as the Kinjal hypersonic missile for the Air Force and the nuclear-powered Burevestnik missile. The latest S-500 air defense systems, described as “unprecedented in the world”, were also successfully tested on July 20.
Summit with the United States
Russia and the United States will hold arms control consultations next Wednesday in Geneva, in order to maintain and strengthen strategic stability, as agreed by Presidents Putin and Joe Biden at their first summit last June in Switzerland.
The Russian delegation will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov and the US delegation by State Department Under-Secretary Wendy Sherman, according to Moscow.
The agreement to start a dialogue between the United States and Russia on strategic stability was reached on June 16 between the two leaders in Geneva. On this occasion, the two presidents signed a joint declaration in which they confirmed the postulate that in a nuclear war there can be no winners and, therefore, it cannot be started.
The two countries take this step while there is only one nuclear treaty in force between the two largest atomic powers.
The United States and Russia extended the new START at the start of the year – shortly before its expiration – until 2026. Faced with the emergence of new weapons, including hypersonic weapons, Russia offered to United States to broaden the agenda and include all offensive and defensive weapons, both nuclear and conventional, capable of solving strategic tasks.
