The ranking of the image of presidents of Latin America after a year and a half of pandemic

A survey of opinion leaders in Latin America assessed the approval of the performance of heads of state in the region in the context of COVID-19. The data can be found in the first place to Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, President of Uruguay. He is followed by Sebastián Piñera, president of Chile and, in third place, is the new president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso. However, when it comes to the management of the pandemic and the vaccination process, the ranking changes and puts Chile at the top of the list. Uruguay and Colombia are in second and third place respectively.

The survey was conducted by Ipsos, the multinational market research and consulting company based in Paris, France. To get the results, 380 interviews were conducted in 14 Latin American countries.

Regarding the approval ranking of Latin American heads of state, With less than 30% approval are: Alberto Fernández, president of Argentina, is in eighth place, followed by Andrés López Obrado of Mexico, who is in ninth place. The list continues with Miguel Díaz-Canel from Cuba, occupying the tenth position; Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil, is ranked eleventh; and Nicolás Maduro, from Venezuela, occupies the last position. These last three heads of state retain the lowest approval percentages with 19%, 14% and 6% respectively.

Chile, Uruguay and Colombia lead the results with the highest percentage of approval of their vaccination processes. Bolivia, Brazil and Venezuela occupy the last positions with a percentage of disapproval of 46%, 82% and 76% respectively.

The best rated and their measurements

Among the measures taken by the Chilean government during the health crisis, quarantines and border closures are included during the early stages of the pandemic. In contrast, the country started with the vaccination campaign in February and until July 19, 2021 reached inoculation with a dose of more than 85% of the target population, while 77.36% already have the complete vaccination schedule. According to the Chile Se Recupera portal, the success of the vaccination program lies in the early purchase of vaccines that include Pfizer-BioNTech, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, CanSino (Saval) and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Recently, the emergency use of the Sputnik V vaccine was even approved. According to the Ipsos survey, 77% of Chilean respondents strongly approve of the Piñera government’s vaccination process.

In exchange, 27% of executives surveyed strongly approve and 45% somewhat approve of Uruguay’s immunization program. In this country, the immunization schedule process is already activated for all people over 12 years old. 71.69% of the Uruguayan population received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 60.41% received both. The government of Luis Alberto Lacalle has taken, among other measures, increasing the resources needed for the treatment of severe cases of COVID-19 and the number of virus tests in strategic areas; in addition, the number of participants in private meetings was limited to 10 and the mandatory use of a mask, among other things.

In the case of ColombiaTo mitigate the impact of the pandemic, the following measures have been taken: creation of Coronapp, a free application that can monitor and detect affected areas and people nearby with a positive diagnosis for COVID-19; entry restrictions into the country and compulsory administrative segregation for travelers; the implementation of the National Vaccination Plan against COVID-19, among others. 39% of people polled by Ipsos somewhat approve of the Colombian vaccination plan proposed by the government of Iván Duque. According to the Colombian Ministry of Health, as of July 24, 2021, more than 9 million people had received the full immunization program.

Although Lasso is the third most accepted president, Ecuador, it is rather in the eighth place with 33% approval according to the survey carried out by Ipsos. The 9-100 vaccination plan proposed by the Guillermo Lasso government is being implemented in the country. The goal is to vaccinate 9 million Ecuadorians in the first 100 days of the administration of the new government. According to the vaccinometer of the Ministry of Health, As of July 24, more than 7 million people had received the first dose, while more than 2 million had been vaccinated with the two doses of COVID-19 vaccination.
