Latin American presidents facing the Covid: Lacalle Pou, the best, Nicolás Maduro the worst

Among the Latin American presidents, the Uruguayan Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou in first place in the ranking of government landfills, with 68% approval; Chilean Sebastián Piñera follows with 50%.

In the meantime, we have to go down to eighth place to find Alberto Fernández, whose approval is 29% (down 14 points since last September) according to the survey carried out by the international consulting firm Ipsos to opinion leaders in Latin America.

Regarding the way in which the different national administrations have dealt manage the coronavirus pandemic, according to this work carried out in July 2021, Chile is the country that has best managed the health crisis with an approval rate of 76% (up 33 points since September). Uruguay completes the podium with 73% and Colombia with 45%. The lowest rated are Brazil and Venezuela, with respectively 75% and 95% negative.

In this segment, the Argentina are in fifth place with 36% approval of managing the pandemic, although experiencing a notable drop from last year’s measurement of 58% positive. This latter percentage is the one he now disapproves of.

Who best managed the vaccination operation

As for vaccination process that governments have done to immunize their populations, the same triple of approval is repeated which was seen in terms of the health management of the virus: Chile (88%), Uruguay (72%) and Colombia (48%). Brazil and Venezuela are at the bottom of the table.

This is where Argentina is ranked highest, ranking fourth with 42% approval. Beyond the vaccination work carried out by the national government, in collaboration with the provincial and municipal administrations, the percentage of disapproval reaches 49% according to the people consulted.

Returning to the leadership endorsement of the CEOs, others who have fallen (since last year) in the rating are the presidents of Colombia, Iván Duque (dropped from 46% to 33%), and Cuba. Miguel Díaz-Canel (from 26% to 19%).

In the case of countries where there have been changes in president in recent months – such as Ecuador with Guillermo Lasso and Peru with Francisco Sagasti – there is a more favorable assessment of the performance of presidents and vaccination processes in their own countries, while the external evaluation may be influenced by the image of the leaders who came before them.

The Ipsos survey sheet indicates that it was drawn up online, between June 30 and July 13, 2021, with 380 renowned opinion leaders and journalists, belonging to 14 Latin American countries.
