“We wanted the law to establish the terms of recourse to dismissal, specifying above all that such dismissal could not take place within two months and that it would be accompanied by compensation for the employee, the Senate has deleted this provision “, explained the Minister of Labor, Elisabeth Borne, quoted by the AFP news agency.

The French Parliament approved compulsory vaccination for certain professions, such as healthcare workers, and the use of “Health pass”, in most public establishments such as cafes, cinemas, nightclubs, trains and airplanes.

The measure, which has sparked protests against it across the country, is expected to come into force in early August.

However, lawmakers have rejected the penalties initially planned for those who fail to comply with the measures, such as the case of being able to fire a worker who has not yet been immunized.

A decision which, according to the Minister of Labor, will reduce the protection of the employees concerned.

“The objective is, in the first place, to convince of the vaccination and to facilitate it”, he pointed out.

According to specialists, a dismissal for this reason, dictated under the Labor Code, which requires the employer to justify a compelling reason to do so, is not obvious and will be
“probably marginal”.

To date, 33.2 million people in France, nearly half of its population, are fully immune.
