Doctor Javier Diez Canseco, quoted in the official report published by the press agency AFP, indicates that there is no person-to-person contagion, for the mucormycotic fungus is in the soil, in the fruits, in the bread which is left in reserve and “in the dirt which is kept in the house”.

Another doctor, María del Rosario Castro, explained that the patient, at first, presented a tooth decay “which was not normal”, and that he was previously treated in intensive care because of the coronavirus. According to the professional explanation, mucormycosis is an infection caused by fungi that can affect the nasal passages and lungs. Black fungus cases have been detected in India, Iraq, Iran, Uruguay and Guatemala.
