New York Assembly suspends inquiry against Governor Andrew Cuomo

New York State Assembly will suspend its investigation into the impeachment of Governor Andrew Cuomo once he leaves office, Democratic House Speaker Carl Heastie reported.

Cuomo resigned Tuesday over allegations of sexual harassment against him, days after more people urged him to resign or face the possibility of being impeached by Democratic-majority Congress through impeachment.

At this moment, Cuomo said his resignation will take effect in 14 days., when he is replaced by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.

The state attorney general released last week an independent investigation that found Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women.

Heastie said in a statement that the legal affairs committee had learned from its lawyers that there could be no dismissal and dismissal of an elected official who is no longer in office.

However, added the Speaker of the New York Assembly, the evidence gathered by the Commission “probably could have resulted in articles of impeachment had he not resigned”.

Since March, Outside attorneys helped the Commission conduct a full investigation to determine if there are grounds for impeachment against Cuomo, a democrat. The announcement came on the day the Assembly initially set a deadline for the outgoing governor’s legal team to respond with additional evidence to refute the allegations against him.

The governor’s office and Cuomo’s lawyer Rita Glavin did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press on whether the local president would meet the deadline.

“The Commission’s work over the past few months, while incomplete, has revealed credible evidence regarding the charges that had been leveled against the Governor.”said the chairman of the judicial committee, Charles Lavine.

This includes evidence of sexual harassment, the misuse of state resources as well as an article in the governor’s report on the pandemic, and “the misuse and misrepresentation of nursing home data.”

At the end of last year Cuomo also faced allegations that he inappropriately touched or sexually harassed women he had met at public events.

On at least one occasion, according to the survey, Cuomo and his subordinates tried to retaliate against a former employee who accused him of misconduct. He has also harassed women outside of state government, according to the investigation.

In March, President Joe Biden felt that if the allegations against Cuomo were proven, he should resign.
