Trump’s criticisms were joined by those of his vice president, Mike Pence, who published an article in The Wall Street Journal asserting that the withdrawal from Afghanistan is “a humiliation of foreign policy unlike anything we’ve known before. “

On Monday, Biden defended his decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan and criticized Afghan politicians and soldiers for defecting and leaving the country in Taliban hands.

In February 2020, Trump signed a peace deal with the insurgents which paved the way for talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

The peace accord called for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan to be completed in May 2021, although the current president postponed that date to September 11, which drew criticism from the Taliban, given the absence progress in the peace process.
