Kabul airport: days before deadline, which countries have closed the evacuation process

The United States and its allies rush to evacuate as much as possible people from Afghanistan by the August 31 deadline amid the deterioration of security by the bombing at Kabul airport.

With other partner countries, some 105,000 people have been evacuated since August 14, a day before the Taliban entered Kabulthe White House said Friday.

Countries which they have completed their evacuation process are to date: Canada, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands and Australia.

Britain, France and Italy are in the final stages and plan to finish today.

Here is the detail of the evacuation effort, country by country:

United States

The United States Army will continue to evacuate people from Kabul airport until August 31 if necessary, but will prioritize the withdrawal of US troops and military equipment in recent days, the Pentagon said.

Washington has so far evacuated 4,500 U.S. citizens and their familiesSecretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday.

Always there were approximately 1,500 US citizens in Afghanistan and the US government was trying to contact them or had already given them instructions on how to get to Kabul airport, Blinken said.

Canada

Canadian forces in Kabul ended efforts to evacuate their citizens and Afghans on Thursday, confirmed Acting Chief of Staff General Wayne Eyre.

He said Canada evacuated or facilitated the evacuation of approximately 3,700 Canadian and Afghan citizens.

Britain

British forces have entered final stages of evacuation of people from Kabul and treatment facilities have closedthe British Ministry of Defense said on Friday.

The effort would now focus on evacuating British citizens and others who have already been cleared to leave and are already at the airport, the ministry said. No one would be called to the airport for evacuation.

Until now, Britain evacuated more than 13,700 British and Afghan nationals, representing the second airlift of the air force of the country after that of Berlin in 1949, said the ministry.

Germany

Germany ended the evacuation flights on Thursday. The German army evacuated 5,347 people, including more than 4,100 Afghans. He had previously assured that had identified 10,000 people to be evacuated, including local Afghan staff, journalists and human rights activists. About 300 German nationals remain in Afghanistan, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Berlin said on Friday.

France

The French Ministry of Defense said that, Thursday evening, more than 100 French nationals and more than 2,500 Afghans had reached French soil after being evacuated from Kabul. This Friday, Emmanuel Macron’s government confirmed that it ended with evacuation operations.

Italy

Italy said as of August 26 it had expelled 4,832 Afghans from Afghanistan. So far 4,575 have arrived in Italy. The Italian government expects its last evacuation flight to leave Afghanistan later on Friday.Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio told reporters.

Sweden

Sweden completed evacuation mission in KabulSwedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said on Friday. He said a total of 1,100 people had been evacuated, including all locally employed embassy staff and their families.

Belgium

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Thursday that Belgium had ended its evacuation operations. Just over 1,400 people were evacuated and the latest flight reached the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Wednesday evening, he said.

Ireland

The Irish Foreign Office said it evacuated 36 Irish nationals after carrying out an emergency consular mission on Thursday. He said he was now aware of around 60 Irish nationals and their family members, in addition to 15 other Afghan nationals residing in Ireland who are still in the country and have asked for help, far more than they had initially estimated it.

Poland

Poland evacuated around 900 people from Afghanistan, including some 300 women and 300 children, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

Hungary

Hungary halted evacuations in Afghanistan after airlifting 540 peopleincluding Hungarian and Afghan nationals and their families who previously worked for the Hungarian forces, Defense Minister Tibor Benko said on Thursday.

Denmark

Denmark carried out its last evacuation flight from Kabul on Wednesday with the rest of the diplomatic and military personnel, according to his defense ministry. It has airlifted around 1,000 people from Afghanistan since Aug. 14, including diplomatic personnel, their families, former interpreters, Danish nationals and people from allied countries, the ministry said.

Austria

Austria does not operate its own flights and relies on Germany and other countries to help evacuate. So far, 89 people with Austrian nationality or residence have been airlifted, while two to three dozen people are still in Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg told national television station ORF on Wednesday. .

Switzerland

Switzerland, which depends on Germany and the United States to aid in its evacuation efforts via Tashkent, has deported 292 people from Afghanistan.Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said Tuesday. There are still 15 Swiss citizens in Afghanistan, but no further Swiss evacuation flights were planned.

The Netherlands

The Dutch government said on Thursday that had evacuated 2,500 people from Afghanistan since August 15, and that around 1,600 have been transferred to the Netherlands. The Dutch ambassador made the last flight on Thursday. The Dutch do not have a diplomatic presence in the country.

Spain

Spain completed evacuation of its personnel from Afghanistanthe government confirmed. Two military planes carrying the last 81 Spaniards from Kabul arrived in Dubai early Friday, according to a government statement. The planes also carried four Portuguese soldiers and 83 Afghans who had worked with NATO countries. During its rescue mission, Spain evacuated 1,898 Afghans who had worked with Western countries, the United Nations or the European Union.

Turkey

Turkey evacuated at least 1,400 people from Afghanistan, including around 1,000 Turkish citizens, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier this week.

Qatar

Qatar said on Thursday that So far it had helped evacuate more than 40,000 people to Doha and that “evacuation efforts will continue in the coming days in consultation with international partners.”

United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates said on Thursday that they had helped evacuate 36,500 people to date, including 8,500 who arrived in the UAE via its domestic airlines or airports.

India

India airlifted 565 people from Afghanistan, mostly embassy staff and citizens living there, but also dozens of Afghans, including Sikhs and Afghan Hindus, said a government official who requested anonymity.

Australia

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday that Australia had evacuated 4,100 people, including more than 3,200 citizens and Afghans on Australian visas, for nine days, with the last scheduled flight taking off before the airport attack on Thursday.. The other evacuees were from coalition partners.

He also said that Australia’s operations there were now over. Morrison admitted that some Australian visa holders remained in Afghanistan, although he said Canberra did not know the exact numbers.

New Zealand

The New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF) carried out three flights from Kabul, and the last scheduled flight had taken off before the attack, according to a government statement. No NZDF was in Kabul at the time of the blasts and no New Zealand evacuees were left inside Kabul airport. Norway
