With his visit, Fernández would bet on rebuilding bilateral relations with Ecuador and supporting this country in its election as head of CELAC at the summit to be held in Mexico.
Among his plans, Fernández was planning to have dinner with Lasso, as part of a visit that was to last two days and it was debated whether on his return home Fernández would respect isolation for having traveled abroad.
The Argentine president seeks to renew relations with Lasso, a 65-year-old former banker, businessman and right-wing politician, after Fernández backed his rival, Andrés Arauz, a leader linked to Rafael Correa in the Ecuadorian election campaign .
Lasso took over the presidency last April, and Fernández also did not attend his inauguration ceremony.
Last July, the two coincided with Peruvian Pedro Castillo’s inauguration ceremony and held a meeting at the Westin Hotel in Lima, where they agreed to hold a formal meeting, which was due to take place on Tuesday.
As it happened, the meeting between the two leaders in Quito was for the days after the PASO elections next month in Argentina.
