Six people were injured this Friday by the knife attack by suspected terrorist, who was later shot dead by police at a supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand, official sources confirmed.

“This afternoon at around 2:40 p.m. a violent extremist carried out a terrorist attack on innocent New Zealanders,” Oceanic Country Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a press conference in Wellington, noting that ” the extremist ” was known to the authorities from his country.

Ardern explained that the 32-year-old suspected terrorist, “obviously supported the ideology of the Islamic State“and said he migrated from Sri Lanka to New Zealand eleven years ago and became a person of interest in 2016 for his extremist leanings.

The president also explained that the attack left six people injured, including three are said to be in critical condition.

“What happened today is an act of hatred, unworthy and contemptible“, declared the head of state.

Prior to the Prime Minister’s intervention, New Zealand police reported that beaten down a man allegedly responsible for a knife attack in a supermarket in West Auckland.

New Zealand police confirmed in a statement that the assailant died as a result of the gunfire inside the supermarket in Auckland, a city confined by an outbreak with the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

The force also considered that the man had acted alone and that, therefore, there is no more risk for the community.

Last June, New Zealand police reported thwarting two attack plans in 2019 in their country, one before and the other after the supremacist attack on March 15 of the same year on two mosques in the city ​​of Christchurch, which left 51 dead.

The perpetrator of this attack, the Australian Brenton Tarrant was sentenced in August 2020 to life imprisonment without bail for 51 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one of terrorism.
