The New York medical examiner’s office announced on Tuesday that identified two new victims of the September 11 attacks, information that came to light a few days after the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack.

Dorothy Morgan, from the city of Hempstead, east of New York, is victim number 1646. who has been identified, while 1647 is a man whose identity has not been revealed at the request of his relatives.

Since October 2019, the New York authorities have not announced any new identifications, which on this occasion were possible thanks to the DNA analysis of the remains which were recovered at the scene of the event which claimed the lives of 2,753 people on September 11, 2001.

More than 1,100 victims or 40% of those who died have not yet been formally identified.

“Twenty years ago, we promised the families at the World Trade Center that we would do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones. and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill this sacred obligation, ”New York City Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson said in a statement.

“It doesn’t matter how long since September 11, 2001, we will never forget it, and we are committed to using all the tools at our disposal to ensure that all those we have lost can be reunited with their families ”, added.

The effort to identify the victims of September 11 is the largest and most complex forensic investigation in U.S. history.

Recently, Medical Examiner’s Office Adopts Next Generation DNA Sequencing Technology (NGS), which was also used in the identification of the remains of US military personnel.

The American President, Joe Biden, will travel on Saturday, September 11, to New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia to attend events organized to commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the White House announced.

Biden will move with First Lady, Jill Biden, New York, Shanksville (Pennsylvania) and Arlington (Virginia), where “Honor and remember the lives lost 20 years ago”, indicates the note published last weekend.

That day too US Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff will attend a separate event in Shanksville and later, they will join the presidential couple for the event at the Pentagon, located in Arlington.

The September 2001 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people, were the largest terrorist attack in the country’s history.
