WHO reported marked decrease in infections worldwide | The first drop in two months

For the first time in the past two months, and since the delta variant generated a third wave of pandemic in some countries, The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a significant drop in the number of covid-19 cases worldwide. According to the agency, in the week of September 6 to 12, 3.9 million infections were reported, which is a 13% drop from the previous seven days.

WHO noted that there was decreases cases in all regions of the planet, especially in America, with a decrease of 17% of cases (1.4 million), in South Asia (-16%) and in Africa and the Middle East (-15%). In Europe, the second region with the most cases, infections fell 5% and last week it was 1.1 million, while in East Asia the drop was 8%, with less than half a million cases.

The United States remains the country with the most weekly cases registered (one million last week), followed by the UK (256,000), India (248,000), Iran (172,000) and Turkey (158,000).

Cumulative since the start of the pandemic, global cases amount to 225 million, including 86 million in the Americas, 67 million in Europe and 42 million in South Asia, the three areas hardest hit by COVID-19.

The deaths from covid-19 during the same period also decreased globally, by 7%, and in absolute numbers they were over 62,000, so the total since the start of the health crisis exceeds 4.6 million deaths (2.1 million in America and 1.2 million in Europe).

Regarding the vaccination campaign, More than 5.7 billion doses have already been administered worldwide, at a rate of 33 million per day, and over 40 percent of the world’s population has received at least one. However, this percentage does not reach 2% in low-income countries, according to figures from health networks.
