Eruptions intensified this Friday at the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, prompting authorities to order additional evacuations, while several flights were canceled due to increased volcanic ash.

In this context, the team of Rethread contacted Andrés Folguera, geologist and volcanoes specialist, who discussed the reasons for the volcanic eruption and the most recent antecedents.

“The island of La Palma is formed by lava flows, these phenomena are not very frequent from the human point of view because the last eruption dates from the year 71”, shot Folguera, who then finished: “People know he lives on an active volcano, for several years there have been earthquakes which alerted people to an imminent eruption ”. On a related note, the expert said that when the lava reaches the sea an explosion occurs.

Finally, Folguera said that the volcano generated seismic pressure when it tried to surface and that this case had a large civil action that prevented deaths and ordered an orderly evacuation.
