At least 20 people were injured, including three seriously, in an explosion in a building located in a residential area of ​​the city of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The explosion, the causes of which have not yet been clarified, occurred around 3 a.m. in a building complex in the city center.

The chief of relief operations, John Pile, stressed that “an explosion in a residential area, or an explosion in general, is not normally of natural origin” and even less considering that the building is not connected natural gas.

According to police sources quoted by the local newspaper GP, an explosive device may have been placed in front of one of the entrance doors.

From Sahlgrenska University Hospital, they confirmed that seriously injured people are women, between 60 and 80 years old.

By mid-morning, thick white smoke was still billowing from the building due to the fire that caused the explosion. “The site has been cordoned off and rescue operations are underway,” said Hans-Jörgen Östler, spokesman for the regional police, adding that they would open an investigation “as soon as the area is secured”.
