A 20-year-old identified as Maqsood, died after being attacked by a tiger at a Delhi zoo in India. Authorities assured that the man had entered the animal’s space.
The venue’s security cameras captured the moment the man is cornered by the tiger as terrified onlookers throw stones at the animal in a desperate attempt to distract him, according to The Sun newspaper.
According to zoo staff, Maqsood had entered the enclosure. However, Eyewitnesses claimed he slipped.
Onlookers argued that the beast appeared to play with its prey for some time before attacking.
In the footage, the tiger, named Vijay, can be seen closing its jaws around the victim’s neck and dragging him away as police rush to the scene.
Onlookers criticized the zoo’s handling of the incident, saying staff did not come to the aid of the man quickly enough and shoot the big cat with a tranquilizer gun.
Witness Prakash Kumar said: “There were no guards near the compound at that time. The man seemed to have jumped into the compound. I don’t know what he was trying to do.
“Everyone started to cry for help. But only one keeper came from the zoo. We started throwing rocks and whatever we found on the tiger. But within seconds he had dragged the man to the corner of the room. “
The victim’s body was found almost two hours later when staff were able to remove the animal.
Zoo officials insisted that they had done everything possible to save the man and denied the allegations that the guards had failed in their duties.
Spokesman Riyaz Ahmed Khan said Maqsood had been warned not to get too close to the fence.
He said: “Despite repeated warnings that he shouldn’t get too close to the outer enclosure, the youngster eventually scaled a knee-deep fence, through small hurdles, and then jumped 18 feet. in a protective pit. “
Delhi Zoo director Amitabh Agnihotri said staff tried unsuccessfully to distract from the tiger as it attacked the man.
